What began as a traffic stop for improper lights led to several criminal charges and the recovery of a stolen vehicle early Thursday morning.

Guelph Police Service officers were on routine patrol about 3:20 a.m. when they spotted a motor vehicle with no taillights driving on Willow Road near Silvercreek Parkway North. Officers conducted a traffic stop and the male initially provided a false name, but eventually identified himself causing officers to realize he was unlicensed and had outstanding warrants.

Further investigation revealed the vehicle had reportedly been stolen approximately two hours earlier during a break-in at an institutional property on Speedvale Avenue West.

A 29-year-old Guelph male is charged with break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000, obstruct police, three counts of breach of probation and driving without a licence. He was held in custody for a bail hearing Thursday.

His passenger, a 25-year-old Guelph female, is charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000. She will appear in a Guelph court May 18.
