Guelph police report that a Peterborough male has been arrested in connection with a gunpoint carjacking in Guelph last fall.

On Oct. 28 at approximately 12:30 a.m. the victim attended an address in the area of Edinburgh Road South and Water Street to meet with a male he had met through a social media platform.

When the victim arrived, one male got into the front passenger seat of his motor vehicle while a second male got into the back seat. Both males brandished handguns and demanded the victim drive to an ATM and empty his bank account. The victim offered the males $100 to set him free, but one of the males took the cash and punched the victim in the head.

The victim was able to alert a passerby and got out of the vehicle to avoid being further assaulted. The two males fled the area in the victim’s motor vehicle, which was later recovered abandoned in the city’s north end.

Investigation by Guelph police led to the identity of the two males.

A Guelph male, who was 18 at the time, was located by officers three weeks after the incident and arrested for robbery with a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft of motor vehicle and possessing stolen property over $5,000. He spent more than a month in custody before being released on bail and will next appear in a Guelph court July 20.

A 22-year-old former Guelph male, who has since moved to Peterborough, was arrested Monday by Peel Regional Police on an outstanding warrant. He has been charged with the same offences and was held for a bail hearing in Guelph Tuesday.
