Guelph police have charged a 69-year-old Guelph man with assaulting police after they say he threw a can of beer at an officer.

Sunday around 2:35 p.m., police observed an adult male drinking a can of beer in Downtown Guelph. Police advised the male that it was illegal to have open alcohol in public. This angered the man and he threw the can at the officer, police report.

The officer was not injured.

He was then arrested and charged with assaulting police and being intoxicated in a public place.

He will appear in court on Oct. 4.
