Trying to sell stolen bike online turns out really badly for Guelph pair

A Guelph male who was attempting to sell a stolen bicycle online attracted unwanted attention when police showed up instead.

On Tuesday members of the Guelph Police Service High Enforcement Action Team (HEAT) began a stolen property investigation after receiving information a male was in possession of a $1,500 bicycle stolen in summer, 2018. The male was attempting to sell the bicycle via an online selling site for $700.

On Wednesday, just after noon, members of HEAT and the Guelph Police Service Tactics and Rescue Unit executed a search warrant at an address on Woodlawn Road West near Woolwich Street.

Police recovered the stolen bicycle as well as two other bicycles determined to be stolen. Officers also recovered a large amount of counterfeit Canadian and American currency, identity documents and credit cards not in the names of the occupants as well as suspected stolen property including cell phones, a tablet and a quantity of mail.

A 36-year-old Guelph male and a 37-year-old Guelph female are jointly charged with six counts of possessing stolen property, five counts of possessing stolen mail, eight counts of possessing identity documents, nine counts of unauthorized possession of a credit card and possessing counterfeit money. The male was additionally charged with attempting to traffic in stolen property.

Both will appear in a Guelph court May 11.
