WELLINGTON COUNTY – The County of Wellington will be receiving just over $2.3 million in emergency COVID funding.

This is part of the first round of the province’s Safe Restart Agreement with the federal government with $695 million being distributed to Ontario’s 444 municipalities to address operating pressures from the pandemic.

Another $660 million will be used to support transit systems but that funding doesn’t apply to the county or its member municipalities.

Funding amounts are based on a per household basis.

County treasurer Ken DeHart said by email the funds are used following provincial guidelines.

“We are also able to carry over any unused portion of the funds into 2021 to support these pressures leading into next year’s budget,” DeHart said. “This may help mitigate some of the expected tax increases that would have been necessary in order to continue to provide community services to our families and businesses.”

The county receives its own funds and the member municipalities separately receive their own funding.

The upper and lower tier governments will receive the following:

County of Wellington: $2,311,900

Minto: $241,600

Centre Wellington: $786,300

Mapleton: $217,900

Wellington North: $311,000

Puslinch: $190,000

Guelph/Eramosa: $297,600

Erin: $267,000

Payments are expected to be made in Fall 2020. Up to $695 million in additional funding will be available in the second phase to eligible municipalities.
