CENTRE WELLINGTON — Bell wants to put up a new cell tower in Fergus.

The request will be heard at Centre Wellington council's committee of the whole meeting Monday.

The new tower would be erected near the intersection of St. David St. and Strathallan St. in the north end of Fergus.

There is concern that the cell phone service in the area is inadequate.

“A new tower is needed to address service deficiencies in a growing part of our community, and goes through the site selection process,” wrote Brett Salmon’s report to the committee. Salmon the managing director of planning and development.

There does not appear to be sufficient conditions to withhold support for the new tower.

“In staff's opinion there is no reason to deny concurrence for this installation,” Salmon wrote.

Although the committee (or council) has the opportunity to receive the proposal for the new tower, it is not the council that actually decides if the tower can be put up.

“Industry Canada is the ultimate approval authority and can approve a tower without municipal concurrence,” Salmon wrote.

Bell will have a representative at the committee meeting where the information will be reviewed and considered.

“A representative of Bell Mobility is therefore attending the February 13th Committee of the Whole meeting to request municipal concurrence for this installation,”
