WELLINGTON COUNTY — Students in Wellington County apparently had much differing views on who should have been elected mayors on Monday night.

“Even though they are under the voting age, 127,000 elementary and high school students from throughout Ontario had the opportunity to vote for candidates running for their municipal council and school board,” wrote Dan Allan, director of content at CIVIX.

CIVIX is a political education charity running this program, Student Vote.

In the three mayoral races, students voted for Dan Yake in Wellington North, Bob Foster in Centre Wellington and Rob Smith in Erin.

In the actual election, the winners were Andy Lennox won in Wellington North, Shawn Watters in Centre Wellington and Michael Dehn in Erin.

In the Wellington North student elections, Dan Yake got 58 votes and Andy Lennox got 14.

In Centre Wellington, Bob Foster got 24 votes, Shawn Watters got 18 votes and Neil Dunsmore got 10.

In Erin, Rob Smith got 86 votes and Michael Dehn got 67.

Student Vote is aimed at helping youth think about and form opinions on politics.

“Participating students learned about municipal government and school boards, and explored the issues and candidates through classroom activities, family discussion and campaign events," Allan wrote.

"In the culminating activity, students took on the roles of election officials and coordinated a vote within their schools.”
